International Programmes

The Framework Programmes comprise the mechanism of the European Union for funding research activities. The duration of each Framework programme usually varies from 5 to 7 years.

FP7 is the short name for the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. This is the EU’s main instrument for funding research in Europe and it will run from 2007 to 2013.The EC budget for the next seven years is € 50.5 billion and the Euratom budget for the next five years is € 2.7 billion1. Overall, this represents a 41% increase from FP6 at 2004 prices and 63% at current prices. FP7 is also designed to respond to Europe’s employment needs and competitiveness. FP7 supports research in selected priority areas – the aim being to make, or keep, the EU as a world leader in those sectors.

FP7 is made up of 4 main blocks of activities forming 4 specific programmes plus a fifth specific programme on nuclear research:

  • Cooperation – Collaborative research
  • Ideas – European Research Council
  • People – Human Potential, Marie Curie actions
  • Capacities – Research capacities

Other significants International Programmes are

  • The promotion of the Cyprus participation in the E.U. Framework Programmes for research and technological development
  • The enhancement of the participation of Cypriot researchers in the COST Program (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research),
  • The configuration of concrete measures for the entanglement of Cypriot research institutions and enterprises in the EUREKA Programme (Programme of Industrial Research),
  • The promotion of collaboration of Cypriot researchers with researchers from Europe and the New Independent States of former Soviet Union, via the INTAS organisation (International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union),
  • The promotion of the participation of Cypriot researchers in the activities of Joint Research Centre ( JRC) of the European Union.
  • The promotion of the participation of Cyprus in the EURAXESS  Services Network
  • EURATOM
